If you’re reading this, it has probably already happened to you: you put money into Facebook Ads because “everyone is there”, then a friend told you TikTok is the future, and your 20-year-old nephew insists Instagram is the only thing that works. You ended up splitting your budget like someone tossing crumbs to three different pigeons, without knowing which one is eating the most.
And worst of all: without being able to measure which one actually brought you customers.
The problem isn’t that you don’t know how to run ads. The problem is that you don’t know where your real customer is. Deciding where to invest in digital advertising in Colombia without concrete data is a monthly coin toss with your money. And with 36 million active users on Facebook, 32 million on TikTok and 20 million on Instagram (with huge overlaps between platforms), the audience map changes faster than you update your targeting in Ads Manager.
This article isn’t one of those generic comparisons that copy US data and tell you “it depends on your goal”. It’s a guide with numbers from the Colombian market, real costs per click and per lead, and above all a clear formula so you stop wasting 50% of your monthly budget on the wrong platforms.
The real audience map in Colombia (2026)
Before talking budget, let’s talk about who is on each platform, using data from Datareportal and Statista. Because the most common mistake isn’t running ads badly; it’s running ads where your customer doesn’t spend time.
Facebook Colombia: 36.8 million active users
It’s still the biggest network in the country, but its growth is marginal: just 0.3% over the last year. The gender split is almost even: 50.8% women, 49.2% men. Most of its users are between 25 and 50. In other words, people who already have purchasing power, who look for information before buying and who use the platform more to consume content than to interact.
TikTok Colombia: 32 million users (over 18)
Here’s the figure that should worry you if you still ignore the platform: it grew 17.1% over the last year. 57.5% of its users are men. And although it’s traditionally associated with teenagers, the 25-to-40 segment is the one growing fastest. People don’t go to TikTok to look for products. They go to be entertained. And suddenly they come across a product they didn’t know they needed.
Instagram Colombia: 20.4 million users
It grew 1.7% over the last year. Most users are women (55.9%). It’s the platform where people go to show their best selves and discover visually appealing brands. The engagement rate is higher than on Facebook, but so is the cost per click.
In plain terms: if your business sells professional services or B2B products (consulting, enterprise software, logistics, manufacturing), your audience is on Facebook. If you sell mass consumer products, fashion, beauty or experiences (restaurants, travel, tourism), Instagram and TikTok are your territory. If you want to scale fast on a tight budget, TikTok gives you the best CPC in the Colombian market.
How much running ads in Colombia really costs
Let’s talk money. The ranges you see on US blogs (USD 0.50–2.00 per click) don’t apply in Colombian pesos. Here costs behave differently because of local competition, purchasing power and the way Colombians consume content.
Cost per click (CPC) in Colombia
| Platform | Average CPC (COP) |
|---|---|
| Facebook Ads | 500 — 2,500 |
| TikTok Ads | 400 — 1,500 |
| Instagram Ads | 800 — 3,500 |
TikTok wins on cost per click. Period. If your only indicator were cheap clicks, you’d put everything into TikTok. But cheap clicks don’t always mean cheap customers.
Cost per lead (CPL) in Colombia
| Platform | Average CPL (COP) |
|---|---|
| Facebook Ads | 3,000 — 15,000 |
| TikTok Ads | 2,000 — 10,000 |
| Instagram Ads | 5,000 — 20,000 |
The ranges widen here because CPL depends on three things: your offer, your landing page and how warm the traffic is when it arrives.
If you have a landing page that converts, Facebook will give you more qualified leads than TikTok, because user intent on Facebook is closer to looking for solutions. On TikTok, users are in entertainment mode: you have to interrupt their scroll to get a click, and when they reach your landing page they’re still in “let me see what this is” mode.
What does this mean in practice?
That TikTok gives you more lead volume for less money, but with a lower qualification rate. Facebook gives you less volume, but leads that close faster. Instagram sits in the middle.
If you sell a low-priced, impulse product (COP 30,000–100,000), TikTok suits you. If you sell professional services or high-consideration products (web design, consulting, machinery, insurance), Facebook and Instagram perform better.
Facebook Ads: the mature workhorse
Facebook has 36.8 million Colombians. If you’re evaluating where to invest in digital advertising in Colombia, its big advantage isn’t reach; it’s the maturity of its targeting system.
Facebook has accumulated 20 years of behavioral data. It knows who your competitors are, which pages your ideal customer follows, what interests them, when they buy and how often they make decisions. Facebook’s algorithm is predictable, and when you know how to use it, it delivers consistent results.
When should you use Facebook Ads?
- If your ideal customer is 30+
- If you sell B2B or professional services (lawyers, consultants, agencies, enterprise software)
- If your sales cycle is long (more than 7 days)
- If you need to generate qualified leads, not just traffic
- If your monthly budget is over COP 3 million
What few people tell you: Facebook penalizes slow or poorly designed landing pages more than ever. If your landing page takes more than 3 seconds to load or isn’t optimized for conversion, the algorithm automatically raises your CPA. That’s where a conversion-optimized website makes the difference. It isn’t that “Facebook doesn’t work”; it’s that your website is killing your ads.
A real figure: at Gulupa Digital we’ve seen campaigns where improving load speed from 5s to 1.8s reduced CPA by 37%. Ads and the website aren’t separate channels; they’re the same system.
Instagram Ads: where the image drives the purchase
Instagram is the platform of visual consideration. Its 20.4 million Colombian users spend more time looking at photos and videos than on any other network. Its engagement rate is double Facebook’s.
Instagram works best for products and services sold through images: fashion, home decor, restaurants, tourism, fitness, real estate, aesthetic health. It’s also the ideal channel for user-generated content (UGC) and micro-influencers.
When should you use Instagram Ads?
- If your product looks good in photos or video (most physical products)
- If your main audience is women aged 18–45 (55.9% of the platform)
- If you have quality visual content to feed your ads
- If you want to build a brand while you sell
The downside: Instagram is the most expensive of the three. Its CPC starts at COP 800 and can easily rise to COP 3,500 in competitive niches such as fashion or real estate. If your budget is very tight (under COP 2 million a month), Instagram will perform worse for you than TikTok or Facebook.
TikTok Ads: the giant you can’t ignore
TikTok went from being “the kids’ network” to having 32 million users over 18 in Colombia. With 17.1% annual growth, it’s eating into Instagram’s and Facebook’s market share, especially in the 18-to-35 segment.
Its big advantage is cost. With a CPC of COP 400 to 1,500, it’s the cheapest platform for getting clicks. And its algorithm, based on interests and content consumption behavior, is reaching targeting levels you used to see only on Facebook.
When should you use TikTok Ads?
- If your product is mass-market or highly visual
- If your budget is small (under COP 3 million a month) and you need to stretch it
- If you want to quickly test which messages work (TikTok gives you data within hours)
- If your target audience is under 40
- If you can produce authentic vertical video (not overproduced)
The TikTok trap: leads arrive cold. People click because the video is entertaining, not because they’re looking for a solution. Your click-to-lead conversion rate will be lower than on Facebook. But because click volume is higher and cheaper, the final CPL can end up being competitive.
The secret? On TikTok, the video is the product. You can’t run just any corporate ad and expect results. You need content that feels native to the platform.
How to allocate your budget by goal (the matrix)
Here’s what you came for. Forget “it depends” and “you have to test”. This is what works for most businesses in Colombia by budget and goal.
If your budget is COP 3 to 5 million a month (SMEs)
This is the reality for 80% of Colombian companies starting out with digital ads.
| Platform | % of budget | Monthly amount (COP) |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Ads | 40–50% | 1.2M — 2.5M |
| Instagram Ads | 25–30% | 750K — 1.5M |
| TikTok Ads | 15–25% | 450K — 1.25M |
Why this split: Facebook gives you the base of qualified leads. Instagram builds brand perception and captures those who already saw you on Facebook. TikTok gives you low-cost volume to fill the top of the funnel.
If your budget is COP 6 to 10 million a month
Here you can diversify without cannibalizing.
| Platform | % of budget | Monthly amount (COP) |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Ads | 35–40% | 2.1M — 4M |
| Instagram Ads | 25–30% | 1.5M — 3M |
| TikTok Ads | 20–30% | 1.2M — 3M |
The key change: you increase TikTok to take advantage of its low CPC and start separating campaigns by funnel stage (TOFU on TikTok, MOFU on Instagram, BOFU on Facebook).
If your budget is over COP 10 million a month
You’re no longer choosing between platforms. You’re deciding how to orchestrate them.
Here the strategy changes: each platform has a specific role in the customer journey. TikTok and Instagram Reels for discovery and early consideration. Instagram Feed + Stories for community building. Facebook for retargeting, conversion and lookalike audiences. And all of it connected to a measurement system that tells you, with data, which platform is influencing sales, not just clicks.
But watch out: a bigger budget doesn’t mean better results if you don’t have the right conversion infrastructure. Spending COP 20 million a month with a landing page that takes 6 seconds to load is like pouring water into a hose full of holes and wondering why nothing comes out the end.
The 3 mistakes that are killing your ads in Colombia
Mistake #1: Optimizing for the wrong metric
Thousands of Colombian companies celebrate a COP 400 CPC on TikTok without realizing their qualified lead costs COP 25,000. A cheap cost per click doesn’t matter if the click doesn’t buy. CPL and CPA are the only metrics that matter. Everything else (impressions, reach, CTR, CPC) is a vanity metric.
Mistake #2: Using the same creative on all three platforms
What works on Facebook (a static image with text + a button) doesn’t work on TikTok (native vertical video, without polished production). And what works on TikTok (humor, spontaneity, trends) can look out of place on Instagram. Each platform has its own language. Don’t copy and paste. Adapt.
Mistake #3: Not connecting your ads with your website
This is the most painful one. You see companies investing COP 5 million a month in ads, but their website takes 8 seconds to load, isn’t optimized for mobile and the contact form has 12 required fields. Ads aren’t independent of the website. They’re the same system. If your website doesn’t convert, no algorithm will save you.
A real case: we worked with a professional services company in Medellín that spent COP 4 million a month on Facebook Ads with a CPA of COP 120,000. We audited its landing page: slow loading, no social proof, an 8-field form. We redesigned the page, optimized speed and cut the form to 3 fields. With the same investment, CPA dropped to COP 38,000. The ads didn’t change. The destination did.
If your ads aren’t delivering the results you expect, the problem may not be the platform. Book a free audit and in 30 minutes we’ll show you exactly where the leak is.
Frequently asked questions
Which ad platform is best for a local business in Medellín?
It depends on your type of business. If you offer professional services (consulting, web design, legal or accounting advice), Facebook Ads gives you the most precise geographic targeting and lets you reach specific audiences by area of Medellín (El Poblado, Laureles, Envigado, Sabaneta). For restaurants, neighborhood stores or local consumer businesses, Instagram Ads combined with visual content of your premises works better, because people discover places through the feed and stories. TikTok has lower geographic precision, but it’s excellent for making local promotions go viral if you produce creative video. The key in local advertising isn’t just the platform but setting the geographic radius correctly and using calls to action such as “Come by today” or “We’re in Laureles”.
What is the minimum budget I need to start running ads?
You can start from COP 1 million a month on a single platform, but don’t expect consistent results with less than COP 3 million a month if you want to diversify across two platforms. With COP 1 million: focus on just one (Facebook if you sell professional services, TikTok if you sell consumer products). With COP 3 million: you can already split between Facebook (70%) and TikTok (30%) to test. Below COP 1 million, ads don’t have enough volume for the algorithm to learn and optimize. In those cases, it’s better to invest that money in organic content and SEO rather than ads.
Do TikTok Ads work for B2B companies in Colombia?
Yes, with nuances. TikTok isn’t the best channel for generating direct B2B leads because users don’t arrive with business purchase intent. However, it works very well at the top of the funnel to position your brand among young decision-makers (25–40) who are on TikTok today looking for entertainment and quick learning. The B2B content that works on TikTok isn’t the corporate webinar or whitepapers; it’s short videos of 60 seconds max that solve a specific pain point in a visual, entertaining way. Example: “3 signs your logistics are losing money” works better than “Learn about our logistics services”.
Is it better to invest in one platform or spread across several?
With budgets under COP 5 million a month, focus on a single platform until you master targeting and creative. With COP 5–10 million, spread across two with clear roles (for example, Facebook for conversion, TikTok for discovery). With more than COP 10 million, all three platforms can coexist if you can produce differentiated content for each. The common mistake is wanting to be on all three with a COP 2 million budget: you end up with a diluted presence on all of them and no real impact on any.
How do I measure whether my ads are really working?
Most companies measure clicks and think that’s success. Real measurement requires three layers: (1) platform metrics (CPC, CPL, CTR), (2) conversion metrics on your site (form completion rate, leads generated, cost per qualified lead) and (3) business metrics (closed sales, average ticket, customer lifetime value). Without layer 3, you’re measuring activity, not results. You need a tracking system (Google Analytics + pixels + CRM) that connects the click with the closed sale. If you can’t answer “how much did it cost me to win this customer?”, you don’t know whether your ads work or you’re just enjoying watching numbers go up.
This isn’t a binary decision. It isn’t about “Facebook good, TikTok bad” or vice versa. It’s about understanding where your customer is, how they consume content and at what stage of the buying process they need to find you.
If you’re investing in ads today and aren’t sure every peso is working where it should (or worse, you have no way of measuring it), the problem isn’t the platform. It’s that you’re missing a strategy that connects your ads with your website, your offer and your sales process.
At Gulupa Digital we work with Colombian companies to build that complete system: from campaign targeting to the landing page that converts and the tracking that tells you, with real numbers, what’s working. We don’t sell you ads. We sell you a measurable lead generation system.
