How to Create and Maintain a Wikipedia Entry That Strengthens Your Colombian Company’s GEO

Does your brand “exist” in the market but look like a ghost online? That gap shows even more when your customers ask Perplexity or ChatGPT about suppliers and the model cites others… because they have a verifiable footprint.

Wikipedia can be one piece of that footprint. Not as a trick or a “hack” to appear in generative AI, but as an asset of verifiability: a neutral source that helps your entity be better defined in the ecosystem.

The key word is neutral. If you go to Wikipedia to sell yourself, you’ll crash.

Wikipedia isn’t a brochure (and that’s why it helps with GEO)

Wikipedia isn’t designed to “rank brands”. It’s designed to document topics and entities of encyclopedic relevance based on independent sources.

Paradoxically, that’s what makes it useful for GEO (generative engine optimization): systems that recommend suppliers have a trust problem. Citing something “made up” makes them look bad. Wikipedia, when it’s well sourced, works as a signal of context.

If your Colombian company already has traction (media coverage, awards, partnerships, industry impact), Wikipedia can help LLMs better connect:

  • who you are,
  • what you do,
  • which industry you operate in,
  • which milestones are verifiable.

The first filter: is your company “notable” for Wikipedia?

Before thinking about “how to create it”, settle this: is there enough external evidence?

A realistic notability checklist (no self-deception):

  • Are there multiple independent sources that talk about the company? (not press releases, not advertorials, not a partner’s blog)
  • Are the sources high quality? (recognized media, serious trade publications, research, books, institutional databases)
  • Do the mentions say something? (history, milestones, impact, context; not just “opened an office”)

If you don’t have that today, Wikipedia isn’t the first step. The first step is building reputation and citability through content and genuine external coverage.

How to prepare the ground (without getting your page taken down)

Most attempts fail because of two mistakes:

  1. writing from the ego (“we are leaders, we are the best”),
  2. citing sources that don’t qualify (your own or paid ones).

Minimum preparation:

1) Put your entity in order in your own ecosystem

Wikipedia doesn’t live alone. If your name, address, legal name, brands and descriptions change from place to place, you’ll look weak.

  • An “About us” page with verifiable facts.
  • A complete contact page.
  • Consistency in your name (at Gulupa Digital we call it “entity hygiene”).

This isn’t “SEO”; it’s coherence for humans and for systems.

2) Identify acceptable sources (and discard most of them)

Make a list and be ruthless:

  • Your own sources: usually NO.
  • Paid articles: almost always NO.
  • Empty directories: NO.
  • Trade media with a clear editorial line: possible.
  • Institutional sources: a very good point.

If you want to review the official policies (so you don’t improvise), start here:

3) Define what can be stated

On Wikipedia, whatever can’t be backed up gets deleted. Period.

Think in terms of “milestones” and “context”, not sales:

  • year founded,
  • industry,
  • expansion,
  • relevant acquisitions/partnerships,
  • verifiable awards,
  • public or institutional projects.

Creating the entry: the safest route

If there is real notability, the least painful path is usually:

  1. Don’t create it from the owner’s or the marketing team’s account.
  2. Avoid writing directly in the article right away.
  3. Propose a draft and discuss it with editors.

Draft first, publish later

A well-made draft feels like this:

  • descriptive, neutral language,
  • a simple structure,
  • zero inflated adjectives,
  • external references for every relevant statement,
  • no “mission, vision, values”.

Conflict of interest: don’t ignore it

If you work for the company, there is a conflict of interest. Admitting it costs you nothing; hiding it costs you everything.

The smartest thing is to operate transparently and ask the community for review. Wikipedia isn’t your channel. It’s a public space.

Maintaining the entry: where GEO is won (or lost)

Creating a page and abandoning it is like setting up a store and never opening it. What ends up happening:

  • someone edits something incorrectly,
  • someone questions the sources,
  • the page fills up with outdated data,
  • or it gets nominated for deletion.

Healthy maintenance (without turning it into a war):

1) Update only when there are verifiable milestones

Don’t update on a whim. Update when there are new external sources.

2) Watch for consistency across the rest of the ecosystem

If Wikipedia says A, your website says B and your profiles say C, the generative engine ends up with a confusing entity. And confusion kills citability.

3) Protect your reputation, not your ego

Your goal isn’t to “control the text”. Your goal is for the information to be correct and well sourced.

Let’s be honest: Wikipedia won’t magically “rank” you in Perplexity or ChatGPT.

What it does do, when done well:

  • reinforces that the entity exists,
  • provides neutral context,
  • reduces trust friction,
  • improves coherence when models cross-check sources.

At Gulupa Digital we treat it as one piece within a complete GEO strategy: a clear entity + citable source pages + external reputation + technical consistency.

If the rest is missing, Wikipedia alone falls short.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wikipedia advisable for any Colombian company?

No. It only makes sense if there is real notability and enough independent sources. If they don’t exist, the right move is to build reputation first.

Can I write my own company’s page?

You have a conflict of interest. You can propose changes transparently and ask for review, but if you write it like a brochure, it will be reverted.

How long does it take to “work” for GEO?

It depends on the quality of the sources and the coherence of the rest of the ecosystem. Think in months, not days, and as part of a system.
